Narrative
One day Robert’s mom came home with a big red helium balloon. She gave it to Robert and told him it was for being such a good boy all day. Robert lover his red balloon so much that he took it with him everywhere. He took it to school the next day and tied it to his chair so it won’t fly away. Through out the whole say all the other children in the class admired Roberts big red balloon and asked him how he got it. He proudly told them all that his mother brought it home for him because he was such a well-behaved boy.
For the next week Robert and the red balloon were inseparable. But little by little the helium in the balloon began to escape. By Friday the balloon was limply hovering just above the ground. Greatly upset by the deterioration of his loved balloon Robert did not know what to do. By Sunday the red balloon was nothing but a deflated piece of plastic. Seeing that her son was so deeply upset Roberts mother sat him down to explain to him that everything in the world must come to an end at some point or another. Every toy will at some point break and we can be sad but we need to understand that this is the way of the world. From then on when something Robert lover would break or even when grandpa Joe passed away Robert understood that this is the way of the world.
First person
It was 6 in the morning when I was woken up as usual by the kind brown haired nurse who gave out the morning medication at the Serenity Gardens retirement home in Boca Raton. I have only been living here for one month but have already become used to the every day routine. I moved to Serenity Gardens after the passing of my wife Greta. I would have never been able to deal with this horrible loss if it wasn’t for a very important life lesson my mother taught me when I was a child.
One day when my mother came home from work she brought home with her a red helium balloon. I loved that balloon more then anything else I had ever owned. I took it with me to school every day that week and would tie it to my chair so that it would not fly away. With time though my beloved red balloon began to lose its air and by then only lifelessly hovered just above ground. When my mother noticed my great distress over my balloon she sat me down to comfort me and tell me about the way of the world. She gently explained that at one point or another everything must die. Every glass vase will shatter and every piece of paper will disintegrate. Only with this understanding from my childhood have I been able to deal with the great losses of life.
Descriptive
The smell of freshly cut grass floated in as Roberts mother opened the door on that sunny April afternoon. As his mother walked in she called for Robert with her soft voice. As he ran towards her robber saw she was gently holding a thin shiny ribbon in her left hand. His eyes followed the ribbon upward where he saw a large bright red balloon attached at the end of it. With a big smile his mother handed him the ribbon over to Robert and said “there you go love, this is for being such a good boy all week”. Robert loved the balloon more then he ever loved any other toy. Robert took the red balloon with him everywhere he went even tying it to his chair when he was in school so it would not fly away.
With time though the red balloon began to deflate. With each day that passed the balloon became more floppy and could not float as high as it did before. By the end of the week the balloon was a lifeless piece of red plastic. Saddened by the loss of his most beloved possession. Noticing her son’s distress Roberts mother sat him down with a plate of warm freshly backed chocolate chip cookies, and 2 glasses of cold milk, one for each of them. She gently explained to him that in life everything would at some point come to an end. Every toy will break and there is nothing any of us can do about it. It is ok to be sad for a little wile but we need to understand that this is the way of the world. After that Robert took his red balloon folded it up and places the bottom drawer of his dresser. And went back to playing with all his friends.
Rhyme
Mother came home one day
Just as Robert had gone to play.
She brought with her a present
For her boy who was so very pleasant.
It was a red balloon tied with a ribbon
And was even better then the neighbors gibbon.
Robert loved the balloon best of all
He would even play with it like a ball.
Every day when he went to school
He would tie the balloon to his stool.
But as the week slowly went by
He saw the balloon could hardly fly.
Soon the balloon was nothing more
Then the piece of plastic it was before.
Robert would spend all day in his room
Holding his balloon who had reached its doom.
His mother sat him down for a chat
About his balloon which was now flat.
She explained that all things come to an end
And that there are some things we cannot mend.
This is how all people cope
Even when they have lost their hope.
From then on Robert knew
Even when he was feeling blue
That all things must come to their end
And there will always be things we cannot mend.

I enjoyed every version. My favorite is the rhyme- you have an impressive ability to rhyme everything and still maintain flow.
ReplyDeletethe balloon rhyme was nice.. i have to use that on my son when he loses his first balloon :).. it makes him see the truth about gaining and losing possessions.
ReplyDeleteThe rhyme has great rhymes in it. I enjoyed how you made the entire story into a rhyming piece of literature. The descriptive also gave me a good feel of the actuall setting that made my senses actually function. Great writing!

My favorite was the rhyme as well! It was really catchy and it showed that you put a lot of effort and time into making it.
ReplyDeleteNot only did the rhyme flow nicely, it followed what happened in every other version that you had written before it! Loved them all, it reminds me of a French short film about a boy and his red balloon.
ReplyDeleteYour story was really cute. Short and sweet. And the poem you wrote sounds like in belongs in a book of lessons for children. It's great!
