Writing Sample- Natasha Wisler

This is the introduction to an essay I wrote. I chose it because I think it represents my writing well.

Sample:

Walter Scott’s Waverley, while providing a paradigm for the historical romance genre, also presents social critique and perhaps a definitive stance on the issue of sense versus sensibility. The Jacobite Rebellion of 1745 provides the historical backdrop of the novel, and the context in which Scott constructs his analysis and critique of the “Cult of Sensibility.” The title character of the novel struggles with sensibility and ultimately rejects it in favor of a more constrained approach to life. In terms of the individual, and in a larger social and political context, Waverley addresses the allure of the romantic and the struggle between this and the necessity for personal and collective prudence. Waverley seems to uphold the notion that sensibility is ultimately detrimental to both the self and society.

Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility also critiques the sensibility fad. The novel is similar to Waverley in its approach to sensibility, individual responsibility and maturation, and social responsibility. Sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood represent a morally dualistic society where prudence ultimately benefits the individual and the populace more than sensibility. The behaviors linked to sensibility- strong emotional response, public displays of emotion, impulsiveness- are deemed both selfish and destructive to the self.

Technological Convergence

As the technology advances, the role it plays in our lives evolves. The ability to make calls is no longer the sole characteristic a cell phone is judged on. The potential for convergent technology has never been more accessible. Do people want the convenience of one device, or the specialized functionality of many?

Gordon Moore, a co-founder of Intel, predicts that approximately every two years the processing capacity (computing capability) of computer chips doubles. Each generation of chips builds on the potential of its predecessor and is able outperform it. This concept of “Decent with Modification” affects all aspects of the technological world and is the basis for the constant evolution of our electronic devices. The increase of capability has led to a technological convergence, where multiple functions are coalescing into a single device. In the past, someone would have to carry a separate cell phone, camera, and personal music player; most cell phones today have the ability to handle all three functions.

While the opportunity to merge functions of different devices may be possible, the success of the products is dependent on how it meets the needs of the consumer. For a new device to become successful it must display an advantage over its predecessors and the people must choose it over its competitors.

The advancements in technology, explained by Moore’s Law, has led to the development of devices with greater capability. The convenience of having the functionality of many devices built into one was seen as a potential advantage over its’ predecessor, but the big question remains, does the market select for individual devices that do an exceptional job in their specialized functions, or gadgets that blend many traits into a single device.

Will O' The Wisp

In the Will O' The Wisp, Pierre Drieu la Rochelle was able to, for me, create the ultimate image of self pity in the character Alain. The book was a bit of a stretch from my normal selection of reading and unfortunately it was not an enjoyable one. Though the story is well told I found it very challenging to relate to the main character. I am a firm believe that we create our own destiny. We are not meant to wait and hope or for that matter expect others to do or create what we desire in life.
Rochelle attempted to draw you into the story. He tries to bring the reader into the same emotional state as Alain and for me that was horrifying. Allowing one’s self to fall into a downward spiral of depression and negative attitudes is something that truly scares me. The drug abuse was an interesting issue throughout the story. Alain seemed quite content with his position in life though he spoke of it as an ailment. He was confronted with numerous opportunities to successfully pull himself from his depression but was almost afraid of that success. I admit to feeling negative and lost at time but it almost always from a lack of knowledge. I simply do not understand my situation. Upon further analysis the path starts to form and really my recovery comes from relocating the path or simple forging a new one. Alain had a path laid in front of him with people to guide him along. The only expectation was that he simply place one foot in front of the other.
One thing that I did take from the writing was Rochelle’s ability to describe loss like no author I have read before. The story is one loss after another. This added to the self defeating attitude of Alain. Why try when you will simply loose what you had and more. Rochelle seems to be using his writing as a way of coping with the loss of his colleague, Rigaut. To lose a close friend by means of suicide must have been a horrid emotional trip for Rochelle. What brings a man to suicide? At what point does he consider his life valueless? Rochelle must have experienced happy times as well as bad with Rigaut yet when Rigaut needed a friend more than ever Rochelle was not summoned. This story seems to be Rochelle’s way of answering those questions for him. Creating a character such as Alain that has every opportunity for success but chooses to fail.
Drugs were not the cause but simply the avenue of failure. Someone once told me that we are what we think we are. If we think of ourselves as failure then we have nothing to expect but failure. Alain failed in life because he saw himself as a failure. That I think is the most important thing you can draw from this story. Think of yourself as a success and work hard to live up to your own self image.

Will o' the Wisp

Writing is more than a visual representation of language and information. It can serve a plethora of purposes. One of the most notable is the use of writing as an outlet for emotions, stress, energy and ideas. In this way, a writer can vent his emotions on a particular happening or element of his or her life, by simply reporting on such events with his own style. It can give a sense of control over said events and help as a coping mechanism. Drieu la Rochelle makes a reference to this early in the book in mentioning “writers who had made themselves famous through their troubles.” I believe that this was largely one of his aims; to help himself cope with the real life death of his friend, after whom Alain was modeled. By rewriting the events leading up to his friend’s death in his own words and style, he is in a way, able to gain a grasp of the situation, one over which he has no control in reality.

Will O' The Wisp

Typically I’m not a big fan of reading novels, and even less of a fan about having to write about them. Will O’ The Wisp was a little different. Although the writing seemed to be a little bit out of my range, it wasn’t too difficult of a read and it was a very interesting one. Rochelle caught my interest really quickly with the way he started the novel. The vivid images that he painted in my head about Alain and his lover peaked my interest. The descriptions that he gave for just about everything he wrote about were so detailed that it didn’t give me the typical feeling that I usually get when I’m reading a novel. I also usually find it really difficult to stay concentrated when reading, especially while doing my reading on a computer. My mind roams all over the place and I almost never remember what I read. The extreme use of adjectives kept my mind focused and captivated.
I think writing, along with many other things such as movies and television, creatively express the real world. This novel depicted the struggles that a close friend of Rochelle’s had in a style and manner that would make for an interesting read yet still get the message across of the deeper hidden meaning behind it all. Recently I saw the movie Avatar. The creativity and imagination that it takes to make a movie like that is incredible. The vivid images and colors, and the creatures that were seen had my mind so enthralled that I was truly amazed by this movie. But like Will O’ The Wisp, there was a deeper underlying message. Different people took away different meanings from the movie, but everyone had an idea. Novels, movies, etc., all have creative ways to get across their messages and ideals and Rochelle did a good job getting his message across through his creativity and imagery in Will O’ The Wisp.

Will O' The Wisp

In the Will O' The Wisp, Pierre Drieu la Rochelle was able to realistically express Alain's real world because in my opinion the "real world" is the world perceived through our analyses, interpretations, and values. It is our thoughts and assumptions on everything and everyone we think about or come across. In the story, we gained insight into what he thought of a person’s character and how their actions and words affected their own thoughts during the conversations he had with them. Alain’s thoughts on everything and everyone he thinks about is thoroughly described. Even though the author had written in a third person narrative I had thought it was Alain who was thinking to himself throughout the whole story. This style of writing helped to make Alain’s situations feel personal but at times detached since the thoughts of the other characters were incorporated into the story as well. This gave readers a look on how Alain was viewed from the outside without exactly knowing what he was thinking about and why he was thinking about things like suicide in the first place.

The way Alain kept denying himself anything that was good and beneficial to his life was his way of encouraging his ongoing depression of life and his continuation with drugs. Alain would talk about all the things that he lacked and wanted but at the same time he would not find the solutions to the things about his life he had disliked. He depended on others to try to prove that he was worth remembering and loving. He talked about being a man of action but in reality he only imagined good things happening and waited for them to happen without acting upon it. Even though the drugs played a role in his downfall, in my opinion it was his outlook on his life and himself that made him slowly unable to live his life and turn to drugs. This is fortified by the line Alain thinks during his conversation with the doctor, “how could he talk about will-power when the sickness is at the very heart of the will?” Even though he was trying to be cured, he could not be cured if he could not stop depreciating himself in the first place. Alain describes that the first time he had taken drugs was because “he had nights to fill: he was always alone, he had no regular mistress since he was so inattentive.” He was turning to drugs because he disliked the fact that he could be alone even with his youthful and attractive looks. He knew he was inattentive but did nothing about it. Instead, he turned to drugs as a solution to fill the time that could have been used to do something productive about his flaw of inattentiveness.

The author made it clear the things Alain could have done to make his life better if only he had tried and if only he had not pit his faults against others. Rochelle had written in a certain style that portrayed the way people’s thoughts tend to revolve around themselves whether it be depreciative, cowardly, or even peaceful (Dubourg for example). Being thrown into Alain’s shoes by Rochelle, it made me see more than just Alain’s own destructive thoughts of himself, I also saw the things that could have been better had he not given up.

reading response week 3

The story of Alain and his constant tragedy draws a reader to express many forms of depression to perhaps force the reader to empathize with the author. This paired with the style of writing the author possesses causes a flashing slideshow of images. There are many literary devices that the author utilizes that portray the amount of sadness and despair that Alain undergoes. In the story, Will O’ The Wisp by Pierre Drieu la Rochelle, the sheer grittiness of the events creates a realistic piece of literature to read, compared to that of other stories which are overly emphasized; removing the possibility of a realistic scenario. This realism appears to be a revelation had by the author: the world is not nice, it does not give, it simply takes until everything you have is gone. Observing the loss of his friend and colleague, Jacques Rigaut, one can only assume that it was this loss that lead to Rochelle’s breakthrough in writing and impacted every word and punctuation of his work. Rochelle incorporated his losses into his writing.
Alain’s misfortunes starts with a “grungy” feel ending with ironic twists. One example in this book was that “6 months earlier, Lydia was a divorcee and became engaged to Alain in a bathroom in NY one evening. But three days later she married a stranger but separated shortly afterwards and is getting her divorce paperwork done soon.” Clearly there are no happy endings in this story and none seem to be happening anytime soon to anyone else. Alain himself was going through a divorce. The entire story is a series of losses with more losses expected. The way Rochelle captures the images of Alain and Lydia in the early scenes are not like the average “painted picture” that most authors strive for, but rather like snapshots of a rainy afternoon in an alleyway in New York. Although the author said that these two characters were beautiful he described them in sort of an ugly way. The staccato-like sentences that Rochelle uses creates an effect of short flashes that come together to make a collage of an even bigger, grittier, picture. These flashes, paired with the short firing of conversation that go back and forth in monosyllabic responses, literally gives the feel of a city backdrop with death lingering in the air. The concept of tying in the emotions felt by Rochelle over the loss Rigaut is obvious in his writing:
It was the eternal room in which he lived. He had been without a home for years but he had his place in this ideal prison which closed round him every evening wherever he was. Closed in isolated, in the last stages of his retreat, he stopped at some objects. In the absence of people who melted away as soon as he left them, these objects gave him the illusion of touching something outside himself. Because of this he became immediately dependent upon the absurd objects which his whims selected. Philosophy, art, politics or morals, he found every system impossibly pretentious. So, for want of being held together by ideas, the world was so inconsistent that it offered him no means of support. Only solid things kept their form for him. In this he was deceiving himself.

Such emotion in a character; that one could feel as he had felt, breathed, lived until Rigaut’s ultimate decision. Although it seems almost didactic, one would still need to know the history and the connection that Rochelle had with his dear friend to truly understand the true meaning behind this paragraph and how Rochelle perceived the moments before suicide must have felt for Rigaut.
Throughout this story, any reader can notice how Alain planned this death from the very beginning, when he noticed his youthful looks were fading away at the age of thirty. His charmingly, fresh appearance might have lasted longer if it were not for the drugs. Alain constantly would set himself for failures throughout his life. With Dorothy, the author shows how much she had meant to Alain, which was much more than Lydia, but Alain still cheated on Dorothy and would even go back to drugs. Alain never truly tried to make his life for the better. All he cared about was these three things; money, women, and drugs. But even when he had the better two of the three, money and a wife (Dorothy), Alain was never content. He felt that he was a bad lover, which led him to drugs and became poor. Alain messed up his life by losing the best thing he could have ever gotten in his life; Dorothy. He never even tried hard enough to open his antiques store. He never even tried to make better of his life. Death was easier for him.
In the ending, like most stories, closure is found but to avoid the common translations found for the story. With the thought of Rochelle’s loss, the ending is more of a closure for him rather than the story’s.

Will O' the Wisp Response

Response to Will O’ the Wisp
Will O’ the Wisp by Pierre Drieu la Rochelle is a story about a man with many problems involving drugs and a very unfulfilling life who ends up committing suicide. The story is very well written by La Rochelle and the imagery of Alain’s world is well described. This novel was very interesting to me as it was the story of a man who destroyed his life purely for philosophical reasons.
This story touches on many themes, including masculinity. This theme was particularly interesting to me as one of the reasons Alain was committing suicide was the fact that he had relied on others his entire life. Alain was getting by in life by relying on women; a girlfriend of his was encouraging him to leave his wife for reasons including the fact that she doesn’t make enough money. Though it was expected for a woman to rely on a man for money when this book was written, Alain’s unfulfilling dependant life led him to suicide. This contrasts with many stories in which a woman commits suicide, such as in Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Anderson’s The Little Mermaid where women committed suicide because they lost a man. This really illustrates a difference in traditional views of men and women.
Will O’ the Wisp was a very touching story about one of the many reasons people take their own lives, and it shows a very realistic view of drug addiction illustrating the despair and hopelessness it causes. I enjoyed it very much and was enamored by Alain’s world and the depression that comes with being a dependant drug addict.

Response for Will O' The Wisp

I believe that drug use and suicidal are the main points in this novel. The main character in Will O' The Wisp, Alain, is described as drug user who loves women and has money. He has nothing to lose but his life. Pierre Drieu la Rochelle perfectly describes one may decease after having all he/she wants in life. Also, he reveals the story very realistically so readers can feel as if they are actually in the scene.

There are many teenagers who are addicted to drugs these days, especially in high school years. One of my friends, who used to be a class president of my grade and valedictorian, was addicted to drugs after extracting with bad influences. Fortunately, the school did not find about it; however, he started to change a lot. He started not to attend school regularly and start to hang out with the bad influences more and more. This led him to fall into disaster. He forced him out of the positions of class president and valedictorian. I believe that this shows abandonment of life. Although study is not everything in life but it is the foundation of life. Because of drug use, he fell from top to bottom. This can be related to the main character in Will O' The Wisp. It doesn't specifically tell the readers about Alain's before life but the readers can assume that he was once a good boy. The only reason why he wanted to commit a suicide was because of drugs, women, and money. I personally believe drug took the major role of his suicide. Drug use held his foot from living a life to death. This gives the lesson to the readers that drug use will ruin one's life horrendously; therefore, it should not be used.

In conclusion, the use of drugs will disrupt one's life as well as others. One would not realize how bad it is until they see what is actually happening to him/her. Also, Pierre Drieu la Rochelle gives a good point that one having everything he/she wanted might take away the hope to live his/her life.

Will O' the Wisp

When writing his book Will O’ The Wisp, Pierre la Rochelle Direu used his own life experiences. It is known that La Rochelle’s own friend had committed suicide only two years earlier. Writers commonly use this concept of referring back life experiences and events for inspiration. Further more this usually makes each authors work more unique and personal. For example Edgar Allan Poe who is known for his morbid and horrific writing was greatly influences by his won like. For example his bad experiences with his parents and then with the family that took care of him later in life after his parents death. Also his many bad experiences with the women he loved and was married to. Poe’s life was a tragic one but I have no doubt that his writing and success was an outcome of his great suffering and that if it was not for his harsh life experiences he probably would not have been as great as he was. Another author who is known for doing this is James Frey who wrote the book A Million Little Pieces on 2003. The book tells of a 23 year old drug and alcohol addict going through rehab and coping with the treatment. It was publicized that the book was a completely factual memoir and became widely known after making Oprah’s book Club and then becoming the number one paperback non-fiction book Amazon. It also topped the New York Times Best Seller List for fifteen straight weeks. But soon after it was discovered that many parts of the book were fabricated. This discovery caused huge controversy it was discovered that the entire experience, which Frey claimed to have experienced, never actually happened. This became a huge lawsuit and all of this because of Frey’s need to pretend that his book was a rue life experience. This shows us that when an author writes about his or her own life it gives some kind of validity to their work. It is extra touching to us and we care just a little more about the characters when we know they are real. For these reasons many books are written with the help of the author’s real life and most of the time their stories are much better for it.

Response for Will O' The Wisp

Will O’ The Wisp by Pierre Drieu la Rochelle has a main theme of drug usage, use of women, and money. The author uses very clear style of writing which is reality. As the readers go through the story, they feel like they are actually experiencing the happenings. The main character Alain, is described as a man who achieves drugs, women, and money without trying. This leads to suicidal for Alain at the end. I've seen many cases like Alain where people do drugs that happen to end up committing suicide, going into rehabs, and feeling depressed for rest of their lives.

First, I've read a story about a college student who attended UCLA Berkeley that used drugs so much that made his life miserable for a moment. He got into drugs during the college years that led him to have debts of almost $100,000. Also, because of drugs, he was expelled from the school. Just because of drugs, his life ended up in cliff. After experiencing all these, he finally realized the drug usage can ruin one's life in just a second. All he could do after these happenings was to pray. Due to praying, fortunately, he ended up attending the school again and clearing all the debt. After reading Will O' The Wisp and comparing this novel to the story that I have read, they are very similar. Both stories was very realistic that I was actually experiencing and also these stories gave me a lesson that drug usage will end up in death in human life.

Lastly, I would like to mention that having everything in life will make one to forfeit his/her life. The example can be given by using the people who won lottery. Not all people who won are living in miserable life but most of them are. Most of the people starts to live their lives as if they are the best. Because they have money, they can have women, drugs, power, and anything that can be bought with money. They have everything that they wanted so after having all, they start to feel bored. That's why they get into drugs, which ends up in jail or committing a suicide. I've seen many articles about the stories from lottery winners and I've never seen people enjoying themselves after years.

Thus, people should not live the life like Alain which will eventually end up in horrible case. I believe what Pierre Drieu la Rochelle is trying to tell the readers is if people have everything that they wanted, they will eventually end up dying. Or maybe drug usage will ruin their lives.

I enjoyed Rochelle’s story in terms of the message it gives to its audience and the technique he uses to describe the events and characters in the story. Rochelle used a writing style that is easy to follow. This allows the story to be more realistic. The other thing makes the story more interesting and realistic is the way Rochelle describes the environment where the story takes place, and even what the characters are wearing at that moment. The descriptions about personalities and feelings also captured my interest. It makes me understand exactly how the characters feel.
This story reminded me of one of the movies I’ve seen called Requiem for a Dream in so many ways. It was a great anti-drug movie. One of the reasons that it reminded me of that movie is the message it gives to its audience. “How drugs take away your control over your life from you.” The other reason is the way it is written is a similar way that the movie was filmed. The Story not only takes place in the characters’ words, but also it takes place in background scenery, which is used to set the tone. The author describes the objects around, color of the walls, and other features that makes us feel like we are in that room.
Rochelle describes what people are wearing all the time. It made me feel like I am watching a movie instead of reading a story because it helped me picture everybody in my mind more clearly. I think that is why I enjoyed reading this story, because, I am a more visual person. I prefer watching movies instead of reading story books. I have a hard time feeling the emotions within a book; which in turn makes the book seem bland and boring to me. It did not happen this time. I enjoyed reading the story thanks to all the precise descriptions about everything. It was as if I was watching a movie.
When I watch a movie each character within the movie retains more character and emotion because throughout the movie the character is always changing and developing. Where as in a book, most of the time the character is described at the beginning of the novel and so there is not much development, change, or detail. However, in this story, Rochelle keeps describing the changes taking place in the characters’ physical appearance and even when they change their clothes.

Death is the cure for the disease called life, well in Alain’s case. Women, drugs and money where all around him it was to easy for him to follow the life that lead to his death. Alain was struggling to find out what he was put on this world to do maybe he was put here to die. I feel that Alain became sick of life as most of us do at least once in life but the fact that so many things where easily available to him made things worse, he had no challenge in life nothing to live for in his own mind. Now as the story progressed Alain was romancing death more then romancing life. Here is a guy that experienced a lot in his life and I feel that his last goal was to experience death.

Now the fact that Alain was a recovering drug user I feel had a huge impact in the way he was thinking about suicide, I am not saying that drug users think more about death I just feel like the drugs created a void in his life and death was going to fill the void. The last night Alain was alive he was with his group of friends but he wasn’t happy but in most situations when a person is around there friends they would be happy. He couldn’t take another second of this life he was leading. There was a glimmer of content with Alain that night because he knew that he was going to experience something better.

I mentioned earlier that Alain had nothing to live for in his own mind but he did he had Lydia to live for. But that morning when he committed suicide he had lost so much touch with his life there was nothing that was going to stop him. To be honest I don’t know if I fell bad for him or Lydia.

Week 3 Response
“Will O’ the Wisp” By Rochelle
Pierre Drieu La Rochelle did an amazing job in writing “Will O’ the Wisp,” he gave readers a realistic view on what occurred during the last few days of the main character‘s (Alain) life. His style of writing is very unique and has a way of keeping readers lock into what is going to happen next. Rochelle uses very descriptive language and many adjectives to set an atmosphere for readers. It is almost like we are in the story following and observing Alain but he is not able to see us. I even got the sense while I was reading that maybe I could of prevented him from committing suicide. And because of Rochelle’s use of description of the scenery and the character’s thoughts I think this story could be made into a short play or short film. The character of Alain is a very interesting because we follow him before his drug use and during the time when he is taking the drugs. And eventually to the point where he is ready to end his life which is very crucial part of this writing.
Alain starts off as a very passive character and is just living his life day by day not really having a reason to live. He seemed to be very unhappy and did not seem set any goals for his life. Alain’s personality and attitude towards life is quite similar to the life of many people in the world today because many of us maybe just living to exist but we cover it up so well that our peers or family may not notice “what” or “how” we are feeling inside. Alain like many individuals try to find something which can bring them the happiness that is missing in their life. Unfortunately, for Alain the answer to his problems were drugs and he thought using morphine and other types of drugs would be the solution of his problems. But what Alain and many other drug addicts seem to forget is that drugs only give them a temporary feeling of happiness. Many people in our society faced different struggles and hardships in life each day but what we seem to forget sometimes is that struggles are a part of life and the struggles we face help us to become better people each day. During this time of Alain’s life even though he had women, money, and drugs he still felt emptiness but in his mind due to the drugs he felt fulfillment and closure. I think maybe he viewed the drugs as a companion since he felt abandonment from Lydia.
Then as readers continue to view the last few days of Alain’s life before he commits suicide, he seems to be even more lonely than usual and many of his settings seem to be in large crowds. But no matter how much Alain is surrounded in actuality he is all alone deep down inside. For example, during his last night alive he was around a large crowd of friends but it felt strange to him being in the crowd because everyone who surrounded him could not relate to his inner feelings and did not notice his distance from them. As Alain came closer and closer to suicide he began to show a lot of emotion and I kind of felt like there was some type of excitement and feeling of relieve. This excitement came from the idea that he was going to a better place, where he would never have to deal with the unhappiness that he has been suffering from. But Alain’s action to commit suicide was very selfish act because even though it may have been the fulfillment for him, it hurt the people who cared for him, especially Lydia. When someone takes away their own life, their love ones are affected the most because they are left unanswered questions and makes this makes their family and friends question “why didn’t we see this coming or how could we of stop it,” they are left with the burden of the Suicide. Even though Farewell to Gonzague is in different section within this story, I see a correlation to what took place with Alain’s suicide, the person narrating seems like they were a close family or friend to the person who died in this section. I think this section gives readers the perspective of the mourner and how they dealt with the suicide. The mourner gives readers a look back on the life of the departed to show their love towards the person. I think the mourner is someone who was close to Alain and felt as if they could have been there for him and they weren’t. The mourner feels at fault for his suicide because like I mentioned already “the what if” comes in mind and they are blaming themselves for the death. And this is a perfect example of the decease’s selfish act of suicide by leaving their family and friends with the burden.

Will O' The Wisp Response- Juan Turcios

Will O’ The Wisp by Pierre Drieu la Rochelle presents the reader with the last couple of days of a man’s life. The man is Alain a drug user who is in rehabilitation and has the intention of committing suicide. I view the novel as a stylized literary version of a real event. The reader instead of being exposed to Alain’s inner thoughts in solitude is taken on one last “night on the town” with Alain in Paris. Instead of attempting to understand the thoughts and memories that must be racing through Alain’s mind, the reader is taken on a literal journey making a number of stops in places which are, or rather were of importance to Alain.

The majority of people are not aware of what truly goes through your mind before that moment of death. Most people assume some sort of flashback consisting of the most important moments of your life occurs. Rochelle does not use flashbacks in the novel, however the reader is well aware of Alain’s past life. The trip through Paris mirrors a trip through his past. One stop after another brings to the forefront old friends and old memories. I believe this is an attempt to demonstrate the frantic pace at which someone’s mind must be racing, in the moment before death. Going from one place to the next, shuffling in between old memories of friends and relationships.

Another aspect of the novel which captured my attention was that even when Alain was surrounded by groups of people on his final night out, he still appeared to be alone. Alain was a stranger to his former friends, and did not belong to any place or to any group. He did not belong with reformed friends such as Duborg, addicts such as Praline, or wealthier people like the group at the Lavaux household, even though he coveted money. Alain kept on continuously finding himself alone in a crowd, which a majority of the time is worse than being alone in solitude. Again Rochelle tries to show the level of loneliness that perhaps his friend Jacques Rigaust was undergoing at the time of his death which may have drove him towards suicide. The feeling of loneliness that resides within Alain is magnified by placing him in the company of a number of lively people, yet his demeanor remains that of an extremely solitary man.

Farewell to Gonzague is another interesting part of the story, although it is separated from the rest of the novel. Many of the references in this short do seem to correspond to events in Will O’ The Wisp, such as the mentions of his vices and telegrams from New York. However, this story takes on a different voice, it is the voice of what appears to be a confused, somewhat proud and angry mourner. The person is mourning the suicide of a friend who could possibly be Alain. Yet, the mourner never mentions the name of the deceased in the story, and we are unsure of who Gonzague could be. It is a rather harsh look back on a person’s life, not filled with the fondness of memory often associated with remembrances of the recently departed. Perhaps it was Rochelle’s manner of releasing anger, coming to terms and even being able to justify Jacques Rigaut suicide. Farewell to Gonzague feels authentic, the true emotions of a suicide from the perspective of the one left to mourn. The letter Consist of a combination between a few words of understanding mixed together with words of anger, to express the true sentiment of the one who is left alive. It appears to take the form of a letter which is directly addressed to someone who is deceased. Perhaps, a friend who is writing to Alain after his suicide, may mirror the emotions of a letter that could have been written by Rochelle to Jacques Rigaut.

Rochelle does successfully create a stylized image of the real world and of a real event. He does not make the event, which is suicide, as dark, violent and depressing as it may truly be when experienced or imagined. Yet, he maintains the overall essence of a man who has last all of his hope and faith in humankind throughout the novel.

Will O' The Wisp Response- Brenda A.

Rochelle did a great job creating such a realistic sense of atmosphere in his writing. It allowed the reader to create a portrait of the events that took place in the reading. Rochelle style of writing also made the reading easy to follow and understand. Alain's struggle in finding an actual purpose in life is something that most human beings come to face at least once in their life. We as humans seem to challenge what is it that life actually has to offer to find the true meaning of existence. I believe Alain's issues of not being able to satisfied with drugs, women, and money resulted because they were all easily available to him. His value of life slowly diminished as the story progressed.

Rochelle depicted Alain's roller coaster of emotions from being content for a moment to feeling completely depressed very well. Alain finally seemed to look forward to death than actually living. His uplift of happiness was brought about as he became closer to actually committing suicide. I think this rise of adrenaline occurred because of the sense of not knowing what death actually had to offer. His life continued in a repetitive cycle which allowed him to lose interest in life overall. As humans we sometimes become unenthusiastic when our life functions in the same cycle until something or someone comes along to alter life's direction. I wish Alain would have noticed that Lydia was that someone to make his life more meaningful. I think Alain's suicide was a very selfish act because it may have brought peace and happiness to himself but was very unfortunate for Lydia. This was a great novel. I truly enjoyed it.

Will 'O The Wisp Response

There were a few things that stood out in my mind when I read Will O’ The Wisp. Essentially, I saw a variation in Alain’s mentality throughout the story. As the story progressed, I thought Alain’s attitude towards life changed as well. I thought Alain had gone through three major mentalities. The first was before we see him take drugs. During this time it seems as if Alain was incredibly indifferent to his life. He was trying to find something to live for besides drugs, money, and women, all of which he had, but not in his mind. I thought Alain was ‘going through the motions’ of life. By this I mean instead of living, he merely existed. It was as if everything in his life was a catch 22 and he could just not find happiness.

The second stage of Alain’s mentality towards his life occurred the night he took drugs and drank with his friends. I thought Alain changed during this time because he just did not seem as unhappy. Perhaps it was because he was taking drugs. Although drugs could be the cause of Alain’s problems, when he was on morphine and opium it seemed as if he had a reason to live.

The third stage of Alain’s mentality can be seen the morning before he commits suicide. When Alain wakes up, he is motivated and just more energetic in general. Although he spends a large amount of time in his bed, he can be seen running up the stairs after receiving the phone call from Solange. I think the reason for this final change in Alain’s attitude is because he has something to look forward to: death. As the story progressed, and Alain came closer to committing suicide, he became happier as well. Perhaps then, Alain’s reason for living was to die. In the end, it was tragic how Alain never realized how he had Lydia to live for. In this case, Alain did not have to commit suicide, as Lydia loved him.

Pierre Drieu la Rochelle response- Bryan R

The Power of Writing

Writing is a form of artistic expression that has the ability to illustrate and bring a story to life. Whether it is fictional or science fictional, a writer can utilize a certain writing style to paint a picture for his/her audience in order to convey his/her message. Pierre Drieu La Rochelle magnificently develops sort of a monologue or story line that seems so real and truthful that it can be presented in a documentary film. It is fair to attribute this aspect of “reality” to Rochelle’s explicit and sophisticated writing style used throughout the story. Rochelle struck a chord with me each time he described Alain’s emotions, thoughts and his general background in such detail. The detailed descriptions filled with metaphors and similes made it seem as if I was watching an on screen performance based on this story.

Rochelle presents us with a severely troubled character, Alain, who finds himself to be hopeless due to his wife’s abandonment, his faith in others and his incessant drug use. Alain’s journey resembles so many stories/lives that I have witnessed from friends growing up in High School and my freshman year in college. From the beginning of the story till the end as drugs seemed to completely encapsulate Alain’s life, I noticed the vicious cycle that hampered my former close friends and destroyed everything. Over time, many of their lives like Alain’s dragged on and on with little promise to change from their arduously slow and depressing lifestyle.

Another aspect of Rochelle’s story that I enjoyed was his underlying message to his audience. While reading the story I could not help but think of how much control drugs have over the human body and mind. Of course, I have seen it decay and take its negative effect on friends, but I have never read its effects so explicitly. Having the opportunity to read and create images of each situation in the storyline allowed me to vividly realize what I did not know in depth. If Pierre intended to send a message to the rest of the world, I would interpret it to express how precious and fragile the human mind is against drugs. Drugs sway a person’s mind to think on opposite spectrums. For instance, one may think they can beat the addiction without a problem as in my friend’s case freshman year of High School or one may lose hope and think their life is submerging under water unable to breathe in an air of hope for coming clean, as in Alain’s case. I apologize for my attempt to make a figurative example in relation to the story and human lives in reality, but Alain’s story is the story of many young and some older men and women in this world. Not only was the plot effective to illustrate the story but Pierre’s elaborate writing style developed a documentarian aspect that seemed so real.

The Beginning of My Reflection For Will O' The Wisp

Aleksandra Vileshina

Week 3 Assignment

Will O’ The Wisp

Although I’m usually not a fan of assigned readings, and even less a fan of translations, Will O’ The Wisp is definitely an exception. From the first page, I noticed that the author had a very interesting style. Although the language was sophisticated and captivating, the reading wasn’t difficult and the pages kept on turning (or scrolling since I was reading this online), and before I knew it, I was twenty pages into the text. Pausing to think about what it was that I liked so much about the style, I came to the conclusion that the abundant use of adjectives and relatively short sentences was what made Will O’ The Wisp a quick and interesting read.

The descriptions of every scene and event made the reading come alive. From Alain and Lydia laying in bed smoking cigarettes and later taking a cab together, to the dinner at the nursing home including a full description of the look and background of each “patient” of the facility, to Alain shooting up heroine in front of Falet and naked Eva, reading the story I could picture everything as if I were watching it happen. Although that’s what most authors try to accomplish, not many do in such an in-your-face kind of way and I think Rochelle did an excellent job getting his point of just how miserable Alain was across. Through his vivid descriptions and fast paced storytelling, Rochelle made it obvious that Alain is bored with life and sees no purpose in it, and even though to the reader the pages turned, it was evident that Alain did not feel the same way about his life. Things kind of just happened and nothing amused him. Life could have gone by slower or faster, and to Alain it was all the same- money, drugs and a dead end. My favorite aspect of the story wasn’t the content, but rather the exact concept that reading felt more like watching a show than like concentrating on a computer screen to interpret text.

Reading Response Suggestions for Drieu

The suggestions I've been toying with are first, to consider the book as a stylized literary expression of a real event - Alain is modeled on the writer Jacques Rigaut, a close friend of the author who had killed himself two years before the book was published. That is, how can writing creatively express the real world?

On the other hand, we can look at the novel as a highly polished, stylized work - what stylistic techniques are used to make it hold together so well. And also, what connects "Farewell to Gonzague" to the novel itself? What are the differences in style and voice that indicate that it goes together with Will O The Wisp (it was not originally published - it was found in Drieu's manuscripts).

Otherwise, feel free to write about any aspect that you like!

To Whom It May Concern,

My name is Cem Erbug, and I am graduating from Binghamton University’s School of Management in spring 2010 with a B.S degree in Finance. I started undergraduate school at Middle East Technical University (METU) located in Ankara, Turkey, in 2005. I was participating in a program called Dual-Diploma Program. It is a program which has agreements between SUNY Binghamton and METU. This program allowed me to study English at METU for one full year; so that I was prepared academically to study and speak in the English language. Then during the second year at METU I was instructed in Business Administration; which further prepared me for my academic career at Binghamton University.
I came to Binghamton University to study for my sophomore year in the subject of Business administration in the School of Management. I enjoyed the academic instruction at Binghamton University better than that at METU; which is why I decided to transfer to Binghamton University as a full-time student. Leaving the METU program ended up being the best decision for me, since it benefitted me in various ways. The benefits I received by transferring to Binghamton University not only enabled me to become fluent in the English language, but I was also able to learn more about different cultures. Being able to learn about other cultures improved my communication skills significantly and helped me understand the mannerisms and traditions of people from different countries better.
I have various internship experiences in finance, auditing, and accounting departments of different companies. The company that I enjoyed participating in an internship for the most was Deloitte. At Deloitte in I performed my internship duties within the auditing department during the summer of 2009 in the city of Istanbul. Deloitte also sent me to Finansbank Portfolio for three weeks, which furthered my responsibilities by giving me insight and training in auditing bonds and stocks.
The position in the auditing department at Deloitte particularly interests me because it is a great opportunity for me to work for people who values their employees. The biggest reason I enjoyed working for Deloitte is the fact that Deloitte takes good care of their employees. This method of valuing their employees not only increases the efficiency of their work, but it also betters the lives of their employees since Deloitte creates a happy positive work environment.
I believe I will be beneficial for your company with my experiences that I have gained in previous internships. I am excited for the opportunity to become an employee at Deloitte Touché Tohmatsu. Please review my resume, also attached, and contact me with any questions you may have. I look forward to hear back from you. Thank you, and have a good day.

Narrative
One day Robert’s mom came home with a big red helium balloon. She gave it to Robert and told him it was for being such a good boy all day. Robert lover his red balloon so much that he took it with him everywhere. He took it to school the next day and tied it to his chair so it won’t fly away. Through out the whole say all the other children in the class admired Roberts big red balloon and asked him how he got it. He proudly told them all that his mother brought it home for him because he was such a well-behaved boy.
For the next week Robert and the red balloon were inseparable. But little by little the helium in the balloon began to escape. By Friday the balloon was limply hovering just above the ground. Greatly upset by the deterioration of his loved balloon Robert did not know what to do. By Sunday the red balloon was nothing but a deflated piece of plastic. Seeing that her son was so deeply upset Roberts mother sat him down to explain to him that everything in the world must come to an end at some point or another. Every toy will at some point break and we can be sad but we need to understand that this is the way of the world. From then on when something Robert lover would break or even when grandpa Joe passed away Robert understood that this is the way of the world.

First person
It was 6 in the morning when I was woken up as usual by the kind brown haired nurse who gave out the morning medication at the Serenity Gardens retirement home in Boca Raton. I have only been living here for one month but have already become used to the every day routine. I moved to Serenity Gardens after the passing of my wife Greta. I would have never been able to deal with this horrible loss if it wasn’t for a very important life lesson my mother taught me when I was a child.
One day when my mother came home from work she brought home with her a red helium balloon. I loved that balloon more then anything else I had ever owned. I took it with me to school every day that week and would tie it to my chair so that it would not fly away. With time though my beloved red balloon began to lose its air and by then only lifelessly hovered just above ground. When my mother noticed my great distress over my balloon she sat me down to comfort me and tell me about the way of the world. She gently explained that at one point or another everything must die. Every glass vase will shatter and every piece of paper will disintegrate. Only with this understanding from my childhood have I been able to deal with the great losses of life.

Descriptive
The smell of freshly cut grass floated in as Roberts mother opened the door on that sunny April afternoon. As his mother walked in she called for Robert with her soft voice. As he ran towards her robber saw she was gently holding a thin shiny ribbon in her left hand. His eyes followed the ribbon upward where he saw a large bright red balloon attached at the end of it. With a big smile his mother handed him the ribbon over to Robert and said “there you go love, this is for being such a good boy all week”. Robert loved the balloon more then he ever loved any other toy. Robert took the red balloon with him everywhere he went even tying it to his chair when he was in school so it would not fly away.
With time though the red balloon began to deflate. With each day that passed the balloon became more floppy and could not float as high as it did before. By the end of the week the balloon was a lifeless piece of red plastic. Saddened by the loss of his most beloved possession. Noticing her son’s distress Roberts mother sat him down with a plate of warm freshly backed chocolate chip cookies, and 2 glasses of cold milk, one for each of them. She gently explained to him that in life everything would at some point come to an end. Every toy will break and there is nothing any of us can do about it. It is ok to be sad for a little wile but we need to understand that this is the way of the world. After that Robert took his red balloon folded it up and places the bottom drawer of his dresser. And went back to playing with all his friends.

Rhyme
Mother came home one day
Just as Robert had gone to play.
She brought with her a present
For her boy who was so very pleasant.
It was a red balloon tied with a ribbon
And was even better then the neighbors gibbon.
Robert loved the balloon best of all
He would even play with it like a ball.
Every day when he went to school
He would tie the balloon to his stool.
But as the week slowly went by
He saw the balloon could hardly fly.
Soon the balloon was nothing more
Then the piece of plastic it was before.
Robert would spend all day in his room
Holding his balloon who had reached its doom.
His mother sat him down for a chat
About his balloon which was now flat.
She explained that all things come to an end
And that there are some things we cannot mend.
This is how all people cope
Even when they have lost their hope.
From then on Robert knew
Even when he was feeling blue
That all things must come to their end
And there will always be things we cannot mend.

Statement of Purpose: Urban Planning Program

Statement of Purpose

Tito L. Martinez

From a young age, I have had a passionate interest in the world around me and people’s interactions with it and each other. The more I learned about the world throughout my educational career, the more my interest intensified. In my third year as an undergraduate at Binghamton University, my passion, which until then had been mostly applied through extracurricular investigation, finally became directed towards a cohesive, comprehensive discipline that encompassed all that I was interested in learning about. This discipline, I found, was Geography. I realized then, that geography was more than just a personal interest, but that it was also a critical field of study in today’s rapidly globalizing society. I then decided that it merited more than just extracurricular attention, but that I should focus on geography as a student and declare it as my second major. After much thought, I realized that there was a way that my new focus could be complementary to my first major, Pre-Architecture. My passion for geography was nearly matched by my interest in architecture and the built human environment. Architecture, I found, could be looked at in a geographic context through the study of the urban environment. The needs and challenges of the urban environment are site specific and perpetually changing, and the architecture contained within its geographical bounds has to respond to that. This lead to my concentration on the Urban Planning course of study within Geography.

It is important to me that the ultimate goal of my chosen profession and my intellectual pursuits not be exclusively to make a living, but also to make a change. I feel that Urban Planning can fulfill all of these criteria. The urban environment can be seen as a microcosm of the world, especially in the recent decade, due to globalization’s encroachment into nearly every corner of the planet. This then, provides the planner with the unique opportunity of, in a sense, changing the world. The scale of the city makes this change realistic, and allows for progress and a lasting impact on the lives of people, starting with the immediate residents of the city in question and spreading through the numerous networks available in the world today. This is my goal and this is why I wish to pursue an advanced degree in Urban Planning. I want to be best prepared to make this change, with a refined understanding of the urban environment and its inner workings, and how to best apply this in my working career.

In my pursuit of a bachelor’s degree at Binghamton University, I have learned much about not only my concentration, but Geography as a whole. This well rounded approach has given me a more holistic understanding of urban planning. My physical and human geography courses have taught me important geographic concepts regarding history, politics, health, demographics, development, transportation and culture, all of which can be directly applied to urban areas. GIS has taught me the importance of census data in tracking changes in the urban environment as well as the importance of mapping in visualizing these changes and trends and making predictions and drawing conclusions based on the results. My planning courses have taught me about the specifics of the planning profession in all aspects, from legal to political, as well as teaching me much about the history and theory behind planning. I have learned of the successes and failures of many renowned planners and theorists such as Ebenezer Howard, LeCorbusier, Robert Moses, Camilo Sitte, Frederick Law Olmstead and various others. Because of such quality and breadth of education, I know that Binghamton University would be an ideal institution to continue my studies. Any shortcomings in my academic career here at Binghamton have not been a reflection of my interest or passion for geography, but can instead be attributed to difficulties with adjustment in my first year and later to difficulties with time management due to holding two jobs during the semester to help cover the expenses of college. I have adjusted to such a schedule rather late as an undergraduate, however, I have done so in time to be able to perform to a higher degree in graduate school.

My goal in pursuing a graduate degree in Urban Planning is to further broaden my knowledge on the subject of planning and geography, while at the same time honing in on that which can be directly applied to the profession of planning for a municipal or regional government. I also hope to gain hands on experience as well as teaching experience as a teaching assistant to view the material from a different perspective. I believe that this university is the ideal environment for this, with a dedicated core of geography professors, a small and intimate department, and strong relationship with the government of the surrounding city and region. In this environment, I am sure that I can blossom into an effective, informed and dedicated planner that can make an impact on a city in need, one such as Binghamton, New York.

To Whom it may Concern,
My name is Jeremiah Foley and I am about to graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Binghamton University. I am writing to inquire about the foreign service diplomatic security engineer position I found on usajobs.gov.
My education has focused on problem solving and assessing solutions, as well as teamwork and technical communication. I also have hands on experience in working with oscilloscopes and multimeters as well as other electronic equipment such as electronic strain gauges. I also have experience in both producing and reading mechanical drawings, and a small amount of experience interpreting electrical and systems drawings which I have gained both in school and in my internship at a patent law office which required me to examine many electrical systems. I am also an able-bodied healthy young man who is both willing and able to meet the physical demands lined out in the listing.
I am very interested in this position because I feel very strongly about protecting our overseas interests and would like to assist in helping to keep our interests and our workers safe. I am also very interested in travelling and seeing the world, including the areas where the comforts I am accustomed to are unavailable. I am a very hands-on person so I am also intrigued by the physical areas of this position, I would like to have an occupation where I am doing more than just working in an office and your vacant position seems to be much more than that.
I appreciate the opportunity to work for the US Department of State and would look forward to travelling wherever this position would send me. Please review my resume and contact me with any questions you may have. I look forward to discussing this opportunity further.

Week 3: Reading, Overview & Assignments

COLI 211z – Week 3

Reading Assignment:

Pierre Drieu la Rochelle – Will 'O The Wisp (e-text: http://www.mediafire.com/?y1dct2tg0jm)

Overview

Graduate School

All graduate programs will require a sample of your written work. And while some programs may instead require that you write essays on specified topics, a prepared writing sample would be greatly beneficial to supplement applications to such programs, even though it may not be required. Some programs may specify length and other requirements for your writing sample, what is important is that it be a sustained engagement with a relevant subject. As a general guideline, an essay of 10-20 pages would serve as a suitable writing sample. I suggest revising and polishing a previously written piece over writing an entirely new one.

In some fields, a writing sample is not required or appropriate – in these cases, a sample of your work in the relevant field is still important to include. In Art, for example, a portfolio of work would be suitable, while in scientific or technical fields, a sample of research or, for instance, programming, would be appropriate.

Complete Application Package (generic):
* Application
* GRE (or other specific standardized test, GMAT, LSAT, etc) scores
* Official Transcripts
* 2-4 letters of recommendation, one of which (if 3 or above) may be work-related, otherwise they should be written by professors with whom you have studied.
* Personal Statement
* Writing Sample
* CV (including references)

Jobs

In the job application process, it is equally important to have prepared a sample of your work pertaining to the career you are seeking. It may not be required by a prospective employer, but if available and offered, samples of your written or other work could help persuade the employer. It allows you to demonstrate knowledge and capability in your chosen field of work.

Complete Application Package:
* Cover Letter
* Resume
* References

Assignments:

Exercises In Style- Remembering to Forget

Remembering to Forget
Original
On the 3:32 train to Biloxi, Missouri there was a man with a bowler hat sitting four rows ahead of myself. He was sitting there with a newspaper titled “The Truesdale Times.” The paper was dated January 12th, 2010. He was reading old news. The conductor on train announced “Trimble Station, next stop, Trimble Station.” The man shifted in his seat, preparing to get off the train. He put down the paper and took off his hat and ruffled his hair to place every strand in seemingly random directions, giving his hair volume and style, a harmonizing cacophony as it were.
The man had left his paper on his seat and the train was already slowing down as if to stop. The man was waiting for the door to open, to exit the train. He began to take his first step off when I yelled, “Wait sir!” He stopped mid-step and held the door open. I handed him his paper. He took it gladly and wished me a nice day.
Metaphorically
Late afternoon, the cabin was empty (save two wandering spirits). The rolling metal compartment contained an observer of many. The sole inheritor of the duties of being observed was wearing woven plants and fibers on his melon. The observed, living in the past removed the object on his head and shook the black wheat falling flat on his head.
The observed spirit was leaving the plane on movement toward a slower dimension. He had forgotten his piece of the past in the present. The observed took action and made haste to reconcile the mistake made by this stoic soul. The icy demeanor held by the observed changed from a frigid winter to a balmy summer in which emanated zephyrs to all observed and brightened the otherwise stormy weather.
Surprises
At 3:32 the train zoomed toward Biloxi, Missouri! One man sat in his seat on edge with a bowler hat covering sweaty, greasy hair! He read a newspaper from the past, flipping every page with immense suspense of the possible outcomes of news that had already happened! But to this man none of these scenarios had yet to occur! The train speeding, the conductor shouted, “The train is almost in Trimble Station!” The man’s eyes popped open and looked up with a look of someone who had been snapped back to reality!
Oh no! The man left the paper from the pas on his seat! Running, I grabbed it from its place and frantically looked around for the man who had just been there only a moment ago! Staring left and right time seemed to slow down! There he was! Waiting at the exit as if ready to bolt, I made eye contact! He stopped! He stared! I handed him his paper! “Thank you!” He shouted.

Litotes
On a train I was alone with one man. The man was reading a newspaper from the previous day. The man was wearing a bowler hat. The conductor announced the next destination. The man got up to get off. The man left his newspaper behind. I got up and got it to him. He thanked me. He got off.

Once upon a time, the numbers of apartments and the numbers of people raising animals at those apartments were increasing. Jamie just moved into a new apartment that has a regulation of not bringing any pet into the apartments. For reason being, residents raised their dogs and cats secretly. Jamie’s next door neighbor was well-known as reporting residents who raised pets at home. Because of him, nine families were already thrown out of apartments.
Although Jamie knew that there was a regulation of not bringing the pet into the apartment, she had to bring a dog name Princess, because Jamie raised her for more than four years. She considered Princess as her family and have never thought about not having her in the house. For, she raised her very quietly. One month later, Jamie's sister came back from London that caused trouble. Princess started shaking her tails and barking at Jamie's sister with joy. Because of her barking, Jamie's next door neighbor complained to the landlord. The landlord came into Jamie's house and told them to kick out the dog or else leave the house. Unfortunately, she had to let Princess go.

WAS i to kick Princess out?

The Subjective Side
I moved into an apartment not long ago. According to my parents, there was a regulation that we had to follow that we couldn't bring a dog or a cat into my house. However, I conveyed my parents with tears. I told them that I couldn't live with out my dog, Ivy, because she's our family. Therefore, we decided to raise Ivy very quietly and secretly. One day, I was heading out to meet my friend but I forgot to bring my cell phone so I went back into my apartment to get it. When I came out, Ivy followed me outside. The landlord saw the dog and exhausted. I haven't noticed if Ivy came out of the house. The landlord started to scream at me saying who's dog it was. I couldn't ignore it because she was my family. After that, we got a warning saying that if we don't remove the dog within a month, we will be kicked out of the apartment. Therefore, we had no choice of giving her to another person. Very sad.. :'(

My parents were going away for the weekend and asked me to help bring stuff down to their car. They had a lot of stuff so I put their things inside a cart. After waiting for the elevator for 5 minutes I realized that strange noises were coming from the shaft, from this I figured the elevator was broken and I decided to take the stairs. While dragging the cart down the stairs it fell and I had to put everything back inside. After this I put the stuff inside my parents car and set them on their way.
Ten minutes later I received a phone call from my parents. My mother forgot her phone charger and asked me to bring it to her. I then wished for them to have a good trip for a second time.

Liotes
My parents asked me to help them bring a few things down for their long vacation. Our reliable elevator was not in top condition. I took the easier route and brought it down the stairs. My mother with her great memory didn’t bring her phone charger. I gleefully brought it down to her and sent them on their great journey.

Animism
The phone charger laid lonely inside its bedroom. The loud commotion sounded familiar to the charger and he knew that he will soon be travelling. Then the noises stopped and all was silent. The charger was once again lonely and felt he has been abandoned like many chargers before him.
Some time passed and the charger accepted his fate, it has happened to many of his comrades who now lay idle inside the bottom drawer never to see the light of day again. Just then a handsome young man grabbed him and brought him into the cold air which he has not felt in weeks. The charger was then taken into the car and was plugged into the juice which made him feel so good, he was then reunited with his mate and was happy once again.

Double Entry

One chilly night, my friend and I rush down into the subway station hoping to escape the wind. On the way down, a nicely dressed young man with fashionable clothing and curly hair runs past us to help the woman in front of us. Carefully and cautiously he helps carry a woman’s numerous shopping bags and baby stroller. Slowly and politely we walk behind them, giving them space and time to safely and securely reach the bottom of the stairs when I whisper to my friend that having babies must be a tough job.

As I walk through the turnstile and head towards my respective subway platform, I see the same woman yet again on the stairs. Except this time there was no handsome and attractive man to help her down the steps. And this time, walking and rushing past her I catch a glimpse, a peek of her stroller and saw that it was bare and empty. The stroller did not in fact carry a baby.

Retrograde

Walking down towards my subway platform, I see a woman with many shopping bags and a vacant baby stroller. Strangely enough, before I had gone through the turnstile and paid my subway fare I had seen this same woman on a different set of stairs. This woman with her limitless number of shopping bags and seemingly occupied baby stroller was being helped down by a good looking young man dressed in a fashionable manner. My friend and I slowly walked, witnessing the pair from behind as we tried to escape the frosty air of that night.

Litotes

Going down into the subway station, my friend and I happened to be cut off not by a woman, but by a man. On the stairs ahead of us was a woman not devoid of a baby stroller and purchases from the mall. She receives help from the man; he was neither unattractive nor poorly dressed. We didn’t hurriedly rush them, instead we walked rather slowly. Walking down another set of stairs, I see the woman again, not thinking that I would. However, this time I did not neglect the realization that her baby stroller was not indeed used as a baby stroller but instead as her personal shopping cart.

Exercises In Style- Karell Belle

Karell Belle- Exercises in style- Week two Assignment
Narrative:
It was Brittany’s first thanksgiving in her new apartment, so she decided to cook for all of her family and friends that she had invited over. First Brittany made a list of what she wanted to make in order to know what she would buy from the supermarket. Then she got into her car and drove to the supermarket which was ten blocks away. As she approached her destination she realized that the parking lot was full, so she waited until a parking spot became available. So after she found a spot to park her car, then she got out the car and walked to the entrance of the supermarket. As Brittany entered the supermarket, she noticed that there was chaos inside because people were everywhere running around and cashier lines were extremely long. Brittany then went to the aisle were the turkey and ham were located, as she got there she realized there were no more turkeys left. She began to get nervous because what was Thanksgiving without the traditional turkey. She then grabbed cranberry sauce, potatoes, beans, broccoli, ground beef, desert cakes and cookies, cheese, pork, and apple cider. And Brittany then rushed to join the cashier line and when it was her turn in the line she paid for her groceries. She then ran out the supermarket to her car but as she approached the parking lot she could not remember where she had parked her car. She then walked through every lot until she found her car and she then got inside the car and drove off. Brittany then decided to drive a few blocks further to find a supermarket which would still have turkeys available. She went to three different supermarkets and got tired and she was about to give looking for it. But then as she was driving back home she passed a new supermarket which had opened a week ago and outside the supermarket she saw a signed that said turkeys available for purchase. She then found a parking spot and ran into the market and bought her turkey and left to go home. As soon as she got home she began to prepare the turkey and ham so they could start cooking in the oven. Then Brittany began grating cheese and mixing her sauces to put on her macaroni which she had planned to bake also. Soon after she started to make her mother’s homemade stuffing while the ham, turkey and macaroni baked in the oven. Brittany then prepared her family’s traditional peas and rice dish and the vegetables as side dishes. As she began to feel at ease because everything was going well, she then remembered she had to also prepare the meatballs by using the ground beef she had bought. As the food cooked Brittany decided to set up the dinner table with utensils for when everyone arrived. As the guest began to arrive, Brittany placed the wonderful meals she had prepared on the table. Fifteen minutes later, everyone was there and all the food had been finished cooking, so they said a prayer and then began to eat. And as soon as Brittany and her family and friends began to eat the table collapsed and everyone just sat quietly and suddenly her great grandmother began to laugh loudly and everyone else followed after. And all the food Brittany had prepared was still sitting perfectly on the table. This turned out to be the best thanksgiving ever for her and everyone else. Brittany and her family and friends still laugh about it till this day.
Subjective:

So I began to get nervous because I thought to myself “what was thanksgiving without the traditional turkey?” I then grabbed cranberry sauce, potatoes, beans, broccoli, ground beef, desert cakes and cookies, cheese, pork, apple cider and threw them in the shopping cart and walked with a fast pace towards the cashier line. Fifteen minutes later, everyone had arrived and all the food had been finished cooking, so we said a prayer and then we began to eat. As soon as we took out first bites the whole thanksgiving table collapsed and there was an awkward silence, then my great grandmother began to laugh loudly and so did everyone else at the table. But to my surprise the food was still sitting perfectly on the table waiting to be eaten. It turned out to be the best thanksgiving ever because we still laugh about till this day.
