Original:

Jackie was running late. If she didn’t make it on time, she would have no future. The Ballet Institute was not forgiving, and if she missed the opportunity to audition, it was gone forever. But nothing was up to her. She had gotten dressed on time, and left her house on time too. She ran for, and caught the three twelve bus that dropped her off at the train station at three twenty eight, exactly on time to catch the three thirty one train. Jackie got on the train and sighed, because she knew that everything she could have done to be on time, she did, and now all that was left to do was get to the Institute and audition.

Jackie was having a good day, and up until the train conductor announced an unanticipated delay, she had been convinced that everything would go smoothly. But two stops from Madison, where she was getting off, a sick passenger caused the train to be held “until further notice,” otherwise known as forever. Although at first, Jackie was patient because she had left home early enough to account for traffic delays, she became impatient and even started to worry about not making it. She couldn’t even get out and walk the two stops, because her feet might get tired and she might not be able to perform as well as she could. As she debated whether to take her chances and stay on the train or to walk, the doors closed, and with the ring of them, her eyes opened. And here Jackie realized that although she had been dreaming this whole time, she had actually just missed her stop and would now be late to her audition.

Double Entry:

Jackie was running late and was not on time. If she didn’t make it on time, she would have no future and there would be no more to her life. The Ballet Institute was not forgiving and strict when it came to tardiness, and if she missed the opportunity to audition and did not try out, it was and would be gone and lost forever. But nothing and not anything was up to her. She had gotten dressed and put on clothes on time, and left her house and walked out of her residence on time and at the appropriate moment too. She ran and jogged really fast for, and caught the three twelve bus that dropped her off at the train station, or at the B train, at three twenty eight, exactly on time and perfectly punctual to catch and get on the three thirty one train. Jackie got on and boarded the train and sighed and let out a loud swoosh of air, because she knew that everything and more than nothing she could have done to be on time and not be tardy, she did, and now all and everything that was left to do was get to the Institute and arrive at her destination and audition and try out.

Jackie was having a good and marvelous day, and up until the train conductor or driver announced an unanticipated or out of nowhere delay, she had been convinced and positive that everything would go smoothly and calmly. But two stops from Madison, where she was getting off, a sick and unwell passenger and person caused the train to be held and stopped “until further notice,” or until the issue was dealt with, otherwise known as forever. Although at first or in the beginning, Jackie was patient because she had left home early and gave herself plenty of time enough to account for traffic delays or jams, she became impatient and jumpy and even started to worry about not making it and arriving late. She couldn’t even get out and leave and walk the two stops, because her feet or toes might get tired or weary and she might not be able to perform or dance as well as she could. As she debated or pondered whether to take her chances and stay on the train and sit still or to walk and move, the doors closed or shut, and with the ring or sound of them, her eyes opened. And here Jackie realized and noticed that although she had been dreaming and sleeping this whole and entire time, she had actually or really just missed or forgotten her stop and would now be late and not on time to her audition or tryout.

Litotes:

A girl was traveling on the train and thought she was late to her audition. She had done everything she could to be on time but her train stopped for some reason. She woke up and realized it was a dream but she was now really late.

Retrograde:

Jackie woke up and realized she was late for her audition. She had been sitting on a train that was stuck with a sick passenger. She had done everything in her power to make it to her audition on time. The Ballet Institute would not forgive her tardiness. Her future was over.

Prognostication:

At around three o’clock, Jackie will be running late. She will get dressed and leave her house on time. She will catch the bus and get on her train on time too. She will relax a bit as she realizes that she has done everything to be on time to her audition. Unexpectedly, a passenger will get sick on Jackie’s train and it will stop for an indefinite period of time. She will panic and wake up. When she awakes, she will realize that she has actually just missed her stop and will unfortunately be late to her audition.

  1. I love the story here. It reminds me of times I've let myself worry to the point of stress, and then I either screw up whatever I was worrying about somehow or forget about something else important. I also like how you use humor to show how life-or-death some things can seem ("Would she have a future if she didn't make it? No!").

  2. I often do that too, and sometimes I worry most about the things I cant change or have no say over. So what you got out of my writing is exactly what I was going for! (=

  3. I enjoyed your story. It reminded me of times that I have spent more time in preparation then in action. Sometimes to thought of getting home after a long day would cause me to pass by my exit. On the negitive side of things I spend more time then I should preparing for the things that may never come. I must say that my favorite part was your cross examination. Though it may sound strange to argue with yourself it can help to keep things in prespective.
